Lovett v Walker, 4/15/08
Lovett lost the last game of the
season to Walker
by a scoreline of 6-1. At times during the season we have felt that the
scores were not representative of the balance of play but this was palpably
not the case in this instance. This Walker
team was very strong and have two excellent strikers in Rafi Berrios and
the junior Jordan Smith. Both of
these players scored in the opening 15 minutes. Coach Jewell was using the
game to give valuable playing time to several of the stars of the future.
Both Gober brothers featured during the first half and Elliot McCarthy and
Tyler Decker were also introduced early. It was good to see Austin Mills
returning to the team after his injury-plagued season. Harrison Dykes stood out in the Lovett
team and his never-say-die attitude is great to watch. Jack Hall was unlucky to see consecutive
headed attempts on goal saved by the Walker
keeper, the second save being one of the best seen all year.
Lovett went 4-0 down early in the second
half despite matching Walker
in terms of possession. Stephen Joy
produced a very good save from the mango-cleated Jordan Smith but could do
nothing to stop a fine cross and volley combination making it 5-0. Michael
Gober went close with a shot from a Jack Hall headed pass and Harrison
Dykes continued to excel for Lovett. Walker
went 6-0 ahead before the biggest cheer of the evening greeted an excellent
debut Varsity goal by Matthew Wohlford.
A defensive clearance came out to Matthew and he showed great
maturity and composure by not trying to blast the ball but instead
controlling his shot and putting it past the impressive Walker keeper from 25 yards out. It was a fitting finale that one of the
young crop of players should have ended the season on such a high note and
we wish them and the coaches all the best for next year.
Lovett
– 2 v Whitefield – 0, 4/12/08
In the season’s first match,
Whitefield handled a short-handed Lovett side with relative ease.
From the opening kick-off it was evident that Lovett was intent on
avenging the loss. Much like the Pace game from the evening before,
Lovett controlled play from the start.
The first half produced many excellent
plays on offense and defense. Early in the half, Jack Hall crossed to
Andrew Bleke whose strong, left footed shot was deflected to Will Diesley
who followed, but Whitefield saved. Whitefield countered with several
chances of their own, but was repelled by Stephen Joy who played another
excellent game as he has all season long. Whitefield’s free
kick specialist lined up for a free kick just outside the Lovett penalty
area – his kick cleared the wall, but Joy made a spectacular
save.
At the other end, a throw-in to Jack
Hall resulted in a quick shot to the near post, but it was well saved by
the Whitefield keeper. A few moments later, a Harrison Dykes’
free kick from just inside midfield was played to Will Freihofer who fed
Hall in front of the net. With his back to the net, Hall juggled the
ball twice, turned and fired a quick shot, but the Whitefield keeper was in
position for the save. A minute later, Eddie Nam hit Sam
Roberson with a brilliant heel pass. Sam raced in on goal and collided
with the keeper. Dan Hall then took a ball down the left wing and
angled in for an excellent shot. Despite all of Lovett’s
chances, the halftime score was 0 – 0.
The second half produced a lot of
end-to-end attacks. Jack Hall broke through the Whitefield defense
and took a good shot which was saved. Whitefield countered with an
attack, but a Teddy Rodts’ sliding tackle snuffed the
opportunity. At the 31 minute mark, Stephen Joy came well out of the
goal to make a spectacular save. Lovett went back on the attack
highlighted by a Dan Hall run down the right wing, eluding two defenders
and passing to brother Jack for a shot that was saved. A few moments
later, Andrew Bleke crossed to Freihofer who dished to Jack Hall whose
in-box shot went just left. The Lovett offense was starting to jell
and a goal seemed imminent.
One minute later, Jack Hall received a
throw-in and crossed to Bleke who 1-timed a shot just over the
crossbar. Matthew Wohlford collected a loose ball and passed to
Charlie Gober who beat a defender and launched a great shot that was
saved by the keeper. On a quick counter-attack, Whitefield broke
free, but Stephen Joy came well out of the box to snuff the attack.
With 9:40 remaining, Jack Hall beat the defense down the right side and
sent a cross in front of the goal which got past the keeper.
Positioned perfectly on the far side, Eddie Nam collected the cross and
slammed it into the net. Lovett 1, Whitefield 0.
Whitefield manufactured its best
scoring opportunity a moment later as Stephen Joy came well out for a great
save, only to see the ball get behind him right in front of the Lovett
goal. As the ball bounced towards the net, Teddy Rodts raced in from
his fullback position and cleared it safely out of bounds. As the
game clock ticked, Whitefield was desperate for a tying goal, but Michael
Gober outhustled the Whitefield defense to win a loose ball, took it down
the left wing and passed to Eddie Nam. Nam eluded the Whitefield
defense and calmly served a perfect pass to Sam Roberson who finished for
the insurance goal with less than a minute remaining.
Lovett v Pace 4/11/08
(pictures to be uploaded later this
week)
Lovett started quickly and
controlled play with outstanding hustle and aggressiveness. Every
Pace pass was contested and Lovett consistently won the 50/50 balls.
Similar to last game, the ball stayed in the Pace end and Lovett had
several excellent scoring chances. Christian Baker picked up a loose
ball just outside the penalty area and struck a powerful low shot, but the
Pace keeper was in perfect position for the save. Moments later,
Lovett had a series of 3 corner kicks – Jack Hall taking one at the
18 and struck a perfect header which appeared to be on target, but hit the
upper right corner of the crossbar. Jack Lally, returning from an
ankle injury, anchored the defense and continually thwarted Pace’s
attack. As the half was drawing to a close Pace, netted two fine goals on
two very athletic plays to take a lead of 2-0.
In the second half, Lovett’s
pace of play continued to create chances. Eddie Nam controlled the
ball at midfield and delivered pinpoint passes to Lovett’s
strikers. Lovett appeared to have an excellent scoring chance as Jack
Hall eluded the defense inside the penalty area and was taken down by the
defense, but no foul was called. Later, Hall threaded a perfect pass
to Andrew Bleke who left if for Will Freihofer who struck a powerful shot
just wide. Christian Baker, Harrison Dykes and Sam Roberson played
well on the back line. With threatening weather on the horizon, Pace
converted a breakaway opportunity to take the score to 3 – 0.
Moments later the lightening alarm sounded and, after a long delay, the
game ended with 9:46 remaining.
Pace is an excellent team and their
victory was well earned, but the two sides are much more evenly matched
than the final score would indicate.
Lovett v Westminster 4/8/08

The scoreline of 3-0 to Westminster was unflattering
to Lovett who matched their opponents in terms of possession for much of the
game but succumbed to good finishing by Westminster's fast and skillful
forwards. Stephen Joy was forced into a good early save from a volley and
Ryan Salisbury made an excellent saving tackle, unfortunately injuring
himself in the process and playing no further part in the game. Lovett
certainly missed the defensive presence of Salisbury and Jack Lally while Christian
Baker was pushed upfield into attack.
Eddie Nam was doing great work
upfront and shot over the bar after a good dribble. Westminster's
attackers looked increasingly dangerous and after once hitting the post
their right wing cut in and shot past Joy to take the lead. Jack Hall the
cleared off the line after a goal-line scramble. Hall then moved up into
attack and his center was nearly converted.
Harrison Dykes was playing an excellent game at the back but could
do nothing when a mis-hit shot fell kindly to a Westminster attacker who made it
2-0. Just before half-time Smith
Haverty made it 3-0 when the Lovett defense did not deal with a long throw.
The second half was an even contest but with no goals. Sam Roberson became
more influential and showed great control throughout the second period. He
has certainly improved tremendously as a player over the last year and
shows great composure on the ball. A
header by Will Freihoffer from a Christian Baker corner went just wide. Dan
Hall and John Pulliam were brought on to the field and Pulliam made a
couple of good clearances. William Anderson was also introduced and played
well. There were relatively few more goal opportunities and the game
finished 3-0.
