Lovett
Varsity v Walker
April 15, 2008
Lovett lost the last game
of the season to Walker
by a scoreline of 6-1. At times during the season we have felt that the
scores were not representative of the balance of play but this was palpably
not the case in this instance. This Walker
team was very strong and have two excellent strikers in Rafi Berrios and the
junior Jordan Smith. Both of these
players scored in the opening 15 minutes. Coach Jewell was using the game to
give valuable playing time to several of the stars of the future. Both Gober
brothers featured during the first half and Elliot McCarthy and Tyler Decker
were also introduced early. It was good to see Austin Mills returning to the
team after his injury-plagued season.
Harrison Dykes stood out in the Lovett team and his never-say-die attitude
is great to watch. Jack Hall was
unlucky to see consecutive headed attempts on goal saved by the Walker keeper, the
second save being one of the best seen all year.
Lovett went 4-0 down early
in the second half despite matching Walker
in terms of possession. Stephen Joy
produced a very good save from the mango-cleated Jordan Smith but could do
nothing to stop a fine cross and volley combination making it 5-0. Michael
Gober went close with a shot from a Jack Hall headed pass and Harrison Dykes
continued to excel for Lovett. Walker
went 6-0 ahead before the biggest cheer of the evening greeted an excellent
debut Varsity goal by Matthew Wohlford.
A defensive clearance came out to Matthew and he showed great maturity
and composure by not trying to blast the ball but instead controlling his
shot and putting it past the impressive Walker
keeper from 25 yards out. It was a
fitting finale that one of the young crop of players should have ended the
season on such a high note and we wish them and the coaches all the best for
next year.
