Lovett v Lee
County, 1 – 1
Varsity Boys
February 23, 2008
On a chilly Saturday afternoon, Lovett and Lee County
squared off on a damp pitch in front of a stadium of loyal cheering fans for
both sides. Lee
County started quickly
as the kickoff was misplayed by the Lovett defense resulting in a breakaway.
Fortunately, a great save by Stephen Joy thwarted the scoring attempt.
Three minutes into the half, Lee
County slashed through
the line, but the shot sailed high and wide. The first half was marked
by attacks and counter-attracts by both offenses. Lovett mounted
several attacks led by Jack Hall, Andrew Bleke, Will Freihofer and Sam
Roberson. Midway through the half, Lee County
took the ball down the wing and converted a nice cross for a 1 – 0
lead.
Eddie Nam, Teddy Rodts and Jack
Hall continued to apply pressure. With 13 minutes to go Jack Hall
crossed to brother Dan who headed the ball just wide of the far post.
Seven minutes later, Jack Hall unloaded from about 30 yards with a dipping
shot that had the Lee
County keeper frozen,
but it hit the crossbar. With less than 2 minutes left, Stuart Kenny
placed a throw-in to the foot of Jack Hall who eluded a defenseman and calmly
tucked the ball inside the near post for Lovett’s first goal. At
halftime the score was even at 1 – 1.
The second half was played almost exclusively in the Lee County
end. Lovett controlled midfield and produced a barrage of scoring
opportunities. Freihofer dominated play with another strong game,
winning loose balls and contesting Lee
County’s attempts
to mount an attack. Eddie Nam’s ball control created
opportunities for the offense as Jack Hall, Rodts, Bleke and Roberson worked
to convert Lovett’s ball control into goals. Lovett’s
onslaught of corner kicks, free kicks and shots on goal frustrated the Lee County
defense, but the Lions were unable to convert. With 3 minutes
remaining, a Jack Hall free kick rattled in front of the goal, and Freihofer
finished for an apparent goal. As the team celebrated, the score was
disallowed on an improbable whistle for offside. As the clock wound
down, Lee County survived the Lovett attack and
escaped with a 1 – 1 tie.
